A high accuracy navigation system for use in the central Pacific was developed. The first project phase was the introduction of the transit Doppler sonar navigation system with an incorporated passive data logging facility. During the second phase, computer software was modified enabling the integration of worldwide available radio navigation system. In acceptance trails onboard the RV Valdivia, the transit Doppler sonar, radio navigation system was able to determine ship's position to within a few hundred meters. (Author)
