The availability of low-cost integrated circuits allows electronic programs of increased complexity to be carried in scientific sounding rocket payloads. Discrete component designs are restricted to simple control functions because of space limitations, cost, and the difficulty in achieving acceptable reliability. The advantages of using integrated circuits in control applications in sounding rockets are discussed with reference to a timer designed for controlling the operation of a group of cameras.
