In order to provide an understanding of what Rolls-Royce are trying to achieve with ceramics, three areas are covered: the vision, the reality, and the progress. The 'vision' is described in terms of the benefit to engines and the potential cost savings to customers; the advantages of the high thrust to weight ratio offered by ceramics are discussed. For the 'reality' of trying to achieve this vision, some of the key technical issues to be addressed are described. These are discussed with reference to a component well suited to composite ceramics, the exhaust diffuser. Responses to the challenge these issues create are explained. Under 'progress' some of the real achievements made are discussed. The full range of ceramics being considered for aeroengines are discussed with a focus on one of the most promising groups of ceramics, the fiber reinforced ceramic composites.
