The Payload Deployment System (PDS), a payload separation system, was designed for the space shuttle orbiter. It is a guided, spring-driven system capable of deploying a payload that is both extremely heavy (i.e., 29,000 kg) and extremely large (i.e., full cargo bay volume with fore and aft clearance less than 25 cm). A separation analysis using a Monte Carlo random case technique determined that even under worst-case conditions, all separation requirements are met. A separation test was developed to verify this analysis. Extensive mechanism testing verifies PDS performance and safety requirements.
