Three options for consideration in designing and optimizing the data handling system for the EXOSAT satellite were examined. The first is based on conventional onboard hardware using all special-purpose electronics, the second is based on the use of the SAAB/ESTEC onboard computer to replace as much special-purpose hardware as possible, and the third is based on the use of the ANS/HSA onboard computer. The following assessment criteria were used: cost, development time, performance, reliability, and flexibility. Results of a comparative assessment show that the SAAB solution is slightly superior, but that further study is necessary.
