The purpose of this reference guide is to introduce the historical coding rules of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) from 1975 to 2009. In other words, this guide presents the evolution of FARS coding regulations up to the year 2009. FARS, formally referred to as the Fatal Accident Reporting System, is a particular crash census system. In this system, a set of files have been built documenting all qualifying fatal crashes that occurred within the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico since 1975. To be included in the file set, a crash had to involve a motor vehicle traveling on a traffic way customarily open to the public, and must have resulted in the death of a motorist or a non-motorist within 30 days of the crash.
