The report discusses the design of an adaptive autopilot for a tactical missile. The subject autopilot explicitly identifies unknown, time-varying parameters and makes corresponding adjustments to autopilot feedback gains on the basis of a pole-assignment technique. The method of identification used is the extended Kalman filter. Effects of sensor measurement noise level, modeling uncertainties, autopilot input signal characteristics, and length of the measurement sampling interval are discussed. Identification accuracy is verified by computer simulation. (Author)
