Pressure to move forward with advanced public transportation technologies has generally come from heavily congested areas. The application to smaller cities and to more rural environments is just being explored. The test site for this study is Des Moines, Iowa, where the Metropolitan Transit Authority operates a fleet of about 100 vehicles along 12 fixed routes and a fleet of 17 paratransit vehicles. Specific objectives of the research are to: (1) focus on the potential for using Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) to affect transfers between fixed route and paratransit vehicles and (2) focus on the application of AVL to a smaller transit operation.
