The report compares the railroad retirement program with those of social security, civil service retirement, military retirement, and veterans pension. While they all provide family maintenance income, they vary widely in size, scope, eligibility requirements, benefits, employment and income restrictions, and employee contributions. The railroad retirement program, which provides benefits to more than 1 million retired and disabled railroad workers, their spouses, and their survivors, is administered by the Railroad Retirement Board, an independent Federal agency.
