The inability to efficiently stack certain types of cargo has caused problems in cube utilization and in on/off loading. Present equipment and methods used to palletize cargo result in only about 60% utilization of available pallet cube. During transit to the aircraft, and in flight, the load shifts so that pallets cannot be rolled freely into or out of the aircraft. Cargo shifting in transit also degrades the jettisoning capability. An increase in stacking efficiency from 60% to 80% and a means of preventing cargo from shifting on the pallet is required. The best solution to the problem is the utilization of the load former concept. By providing six to eight ft high walls around the edges of the pallet, all the requirements are met. Greater cube utilization is attained since the freight handlers will have positive walls to stack against, thus holding the pyramidal effect to a minimum. The solid walls also prevents loads from shifting over the edge of the pallet and from slipping through the holes of the net. (Author)
