The report describes a new method for determining whether crash helmets became detached during moped or motorcycle accidents and presents the main results. At traffic signals moped riders were interviewed and the fixing of the helmets was studied. Because the same procedure for motorcyclists was too dangerous, it was decided to interview the motorcyclists at a special motorcycle exhibition. From the results it can be concluded that the detachment of the helmet during an accident occurs more often than is shown by police registration, in particular for moped riders. Other aspects taken into account during the study were the age of the crash helmet, the damage to the helmet surface and the damage of the helmet visor.
