The purpose of the study is to take data on vehicle speeds at 20 sites in Michigan. Five of these sites are among those regularly monitored by the Michigan Department of Transportation, and are included to provide historical continuity. The other sites were selected from rural and urban Interstates, US-routes, and two- and four-lane trunk lines to measure the effect of the new speed limit on vehicle speeds on a variety of roads. The report describes the results of the first round of speed measurements, taken in a three-month period before the speed limit was changed to 65 mph.
