The report presents the development of a mathematical model describing the flow of passengers through a rapid transit station. The model is a key element in the attempt to develop a completely rational approach to the design of transportation interface facilities. The movement of pedestrians is depicted as sequential flows of people across individual station components. Stochastic elements of the model design include the magnitude and distribution of passenger demand, and the modal split of arrivals. The basic processing algorithm for passenger flow is deterministic. The model incorporates the use of empirically derived functions of pedestrian flow through specific station components. The model is designed to serve as an aid to the station designer by simulation the movement of passengers on a digital computer. Examples are provided to demonstrate the program's flexibility and its application to access mode analysis, transit scheduling, and the testing of alternative station layouts. A User's Manual and a bibliography are included.
