Recent advances in technologies related to propulsion, aircraft structures, flight automation, and aerodynamics have led to an increase in the number of vehicles that can operate in low atmospheric density airspace. There are expectations that aerospace operations in Upper Class E airspace above Flight Level (FL) 600 will significantly increase over the next two decades, presenting challenges for the diversified operations within this airspace. Increase in demand combined with disparate vehicle performance characteristics and unconventional operational needs will require a re-evaluation of the current traffic management approach. This presentation will address the needs and possible solutions to support this market in meeting their objectives while maintaining safety, security, efficiency, and equity of the national airspace system.
