Tests of the YG-l autogiro were conducted in the full-scale wind tunnel to investigate the lift, drag, and moment characteristics of the machine and its different components. Tests were made upon the complete autogiro and upon the complete autogiro with the following parts removed: (1) horizontal tail, (2) horizontal tail and rotor-blade tabs, (3) horizontal tail and rotor blades. Additional tests were made upon the autogiro rotor alone. Flight tests were made upon the complete machine to investigate the validity of the wind-tunnel corrections applied in the reduction of the data. The results show a considerable discrepance between the flight and wind-tunnel tests at high lift coefficients. This discrepancy makes it impossible to rely upon the absolute values obtained in the wind-tunnel tests. The flight tests indicate, however, that the true values of the lift-drag ratio are higher than those obtained in the wind tunnel. A maximum lift-drag ratio of 11 for the rotor alone was indicated by the wind tunnel tests.
