Ice-milling tests on a controllable pitch propeller, designed for a large Arctic tanker, were conducted by use of saline ice. Thrust and torque fluctuation, blade bending moment and blade stress were measured at various ice speed-propeller shaft speed combinations by changing propeller pitch. Examination was made on usefulness and limitation of existing methods for estimating ice-milling torque and blade bending moment.
