The quietness of the motor car is an important item in vehicle product quality, and is becoming more and more important in line with the increasing demands of users for improved standards of comfort. There has been an advance in developments aimed at reducing noise levels in order to improve quietness. However, to achieve comfortable characteristics of noise in the passenger compartment, in addition to the reduction of noise levels, the improvement of sound quality, in other words, the production of pleasant sound, is coming to be an important theme. Much research is being carried out into the reduction of noise in the passenger compartment of motor cars, but study of the improvement of sound quality, let alone the means of quantitively evaluating tonal quality, is rare. The report concentrates on a specific tone of car compartment noise and outlines how an analysis was carried out of how it arises and the factors which influence it, and how a method of quantitative evaluation was obtained which closely matches sensory (auditory) rating.
