The six years (1974 to 1980) of the ARIANE program are reviewed. The failure of the second ARIANE launch due to combustion instability at a high frequency (above 2,000 Hz) on one of the first stage engines is described. Manufacturing tolerances for the injectors were adjusted and an acceptance test of each individual injector head established. The launch vehicle's characteristics and performance are reviewed by listing the first payloads alloted. The three stage launch system and SYLDA (the ARIANE dual launch system) are described. The future program for ARIANE is summarized, with higher performance due to increasing the specific impulse on the third stage and adding two solid boosters to the first stage. A payload mass of twice the present system, and a larger useful volume, are envisaged, thereby increasing the range of satellites launchable by ARIANE.
