The paper provides an overview of the development of the electronic systems which are used in airliners for communication, navigation, identification, flight control, engine control, for the acquisition and presentation of flight- and system data as well as for air traffic control. The development of these systems was made possible by the developments in the area of micro-electronics, computer technology and display technology. Finally a brief insight is provided on new developments in the field of electronics systems in civil aviation as Fly-By-Wire, Full Authority Digital Engine Control, Satellite navigation, Satellite communication, and the Microwave Landing System and their implications on future air traffic control.
