On February 17, 1971, at approximately 0809 c.s.t., a Southern Airways Douglas DC-9-15, N92S, struck an electric transmission line static cable during a VOR approach to Runway 31 at the Gulfport, Mississippi, Municipal Airport. A successful missed approach was accomplished, and the aircraft landed at Gulfport. The aircraft received substantial damage. There was no fire. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the accident was inadequate monitoring of the approach. (Author)
