Multiplexing provides an effective means of integrating electrical and electronic subsystems in aircraft. When properly implemented it greatly alleviates wiring congestion, and can lead to sizable savings in weight and volume. By using data processors to control the flow of data within the multiplex system, multiplexing also makes it possible to effectively rewire major portions of the aircraft by means of software changes rather than hardware modifications. Because of these advantages there has recently been an Air Force wide effort to identify the criteria necessary for transition to logically designed all digital data handling systems, and to prepare a military standard for multiplexing in aircraft. The study described in this report constitutes a significant contribution toward this effort. It is concerned primarily with the establishment of Air Force standards for Electrical Power Control Signal Multiplexing (EMUX) subsystems. It also explores the relationship between the EMUX subsystem and other aircraft subsystems. Other subsystems considered are avionics, hazards detection and warning, and weapons management/release. A recommended EMUX system design is presented and proven to have ample capability for all present and projected needs. The report is prepared to a single-volume outline, but Sections V, VI, the Appendix and references are contained in Volume II for ease of handling. A complete table of contents is included in Volume I for convenience. (Author)
