SHIP MODEL correlation tests are an integral part of the ship design practice. Tradition as well as common sense dictates the construction and testing of small-scale models before construction of the full scale design. Hence, many different combinations of hulls, propellers, and appendages are evaluated before the final design is decided on. Among the myriad assumptions made is that of the correlation allowance. This assumed engineering factor is incorporated in predictions of full-scale powering performance made from results of model self-propulsion experiments. Since correlation allowance, as deduced from previous ship trials, seems to vary with year of construction, hull surface finish, ship design characteristics, and even perhaps shipyards, earlier values of correlation allowance which have been used in ship design may prove to be outdated and overly conservative. Using the results of full scale standardization trials conducted on USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7) (frontispiece), and the post trials correlation powering experiments, the correlation allowance for the FFG-7 is determined.
