Deepening and selective widening of an existing navigation channel is proposed from the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut, to Long Island Sound, a distance of approximately 7.5 miles. In addition, the approaches to the State Pier and the Naval Underwater System Center, both at New London, will be widened and dredged. The dredge spoil is estimated at 2,762,237 cubic yards (CY) and is proposed to be disposed of in the Providence, Rhode Island, dump site. The resultant improvement would assure the development of the full capabilities of the new SSN 688 class submarine. Also, economic benefits would be derived as an additional benefit to commercial shipping.
