The properties and applications of steels, light alloys, titanium, and carbon composites are compared. A percentage evaluation of their use in civil aircraft, military aircraft, helicopters, and spacecraft shows trends in airframe materials selection. Criteria for the choice of materials are discussed. Mechanical static characteristics, fatigue behavior, ruggedness, and cost are considered. A more widespread utilization of composites is indicated.
