Under sponsorship of Port Authority of Allegany County, Pennsylvania, Transit Expressway has been constructed and evaluated through an experimental research and development project. Full-scale test facility is in South Park, Allegany, County, Pa., 11 miles from Pittsburg CBD. The all electric vehicles resemble buses and run on four pairs of driven pneumatic tires. System is based on use of compact, minimum weight automated vehicles operating singularly or in trains. System is designed to fit needs of medium population density metropolitan areas in urban service, not for intercity use. Evaluations were made between Aug. '65 and June '66. The expressway was public acceptance tested, and economic feasibility tested by dynamic simulation model of commercial system. Capital costs and methods of financing were developed.
