Several states of growth of cosmonautics are outlined briefly. The development of jet engines and rockets, the first successful spacecraft launches, the exploratory stage of avalanchelike growth in space activity, the contribution to the national economy and to science and the modern stage of increasing the economic return and decreasing the cost are included. The main emphasis is on the contributions of cosmonautics to the national economy, through communications, meteorological, earth resources study, and other satellite systems. The need to develop reusable and long-term space vehicles, including the specific contributions of the Salyut series, is discussed. (Author)
