An automatic driving system for an automobile where it can be driven without a human driver is called an intelligent vehicle. This report describes studies on an intelligent vehicle that was developed in Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, AIST, MITI, and has functions of a machine vision system and an autonomous navigation system. The purpose of the studies was an intelligent vehicle that could move to its goals while avoiding obstacles. The intelligent vehicle using a compact passenger car was named the Intelligent Vehicle, and the studies were initiated in 1974.
