The patent relates to an automatic dynamic water braking reversal system for a ship's propulsion plant comprising a water brake on the shaft connecting the prime mover and the reduction gears. This enables rapid speed reduction of the propeller shaft thereby reducing the amount of energy required to be absorbed by the clutches used with an unidirectional prime mover and a reversible drive shaft. Additionally, the water brake may be used to load the engine to obtain lower idle speed operation.
