A study aimed at showing the possible development of solid propellant boosters is presented. Two examples are used: low stage boosters (the Ariane 5 P230) and upper stage boosters (MAGE engine). The three main parameters driving the development and improvement of launch vehicles such as Ariane 5 are functional safety (automatic and manned flight); competitiveness with other launch means; and performance.
