Surface-to-Air Missiles, Air-to-Air Missiles, and enemy Aircraft are a major threat to tactical aircraft. Effective countermeasures aboard the tactical aircraft are dependent upon the capability of the threat sensory equipment employed. The purpose of this report is to investigate, in detail, the optimum design of an integrated infrared passive detection system with a laser ranger system to produce a threat sensor system capable of providing maximum discrimination against false targets, detection of all legitimate threats, target range and range rate information, target positional coordinate information and threat assessment. This study has resulted in the design of a combined Infrared-Laser Ranger System which meets all contract requirements and has all the advantages of infrared and laser systems and a minimum of disadvantages offered by any of the systems used singularly. This has been accomplished by combining the Infrared/Laser Ranger System into a single lightweight, low power consumption package which jointly uses the same optical system. This eliminates the necessity for complex stabilization platforms, pointing accuracies, and related servo system, and permits the use of passive infrared to detect a target and then fire the laser only to verify the target and determine range and range rate.
