The criteria to be met by personnel, items and operations in clean rooms for spacecraft and associated equipment so that the strict levels of environmental cleanliness and contamination control required by the European Space Agency (ESA) can be achieved and maintained are defined. Possible spacecraft failures or malfunctions due to contamination are detailed and guidelines for the production of the cleanliness requirement specification and the cleanliness control plan are given.
