Trends in gas dynamics experimentation in connection with the development of supersonic aircraft, space transportation systems, and the problems of planetary entry are reviewed. The main features are the development of wind tunnel facilities at very high Reynolds numbers, and the simulation of both stagnation enthalpies of from 500 to 1000 M joule/kg of planetary atmospheres. The development of supersonic combustion ramjets flying at Mach numbers of from 10 to 12 is also considered. (Author)
