The Space Shuttle scientific payload of nine instruments designed to demonstrate the usefulness of the Shuttle for research in space plasma physics, solar physics, astronomy, life sciences, and space technology is discussed. These instruments will also evaluate the environments associated with operation of the vehicle to aid in the planning of future scientific payloads.
