Scheduled for completion in 1980, the Ariane launcher will be the first European rocket launched using a cryogenic stage powered by liquid hydrogen and oxygen. The main technical specifications for the launcher's three stages are given, with a description of its flight characteristics. Economic information on its manufacture includes a list of the contractors involved and their assigned tasks. The Ariane will enter series production in the 1980's to meet a projected European demand for 35 to 50 geostationary satellites during that decade. (Author)
