This inventory of barges is aimed at providing both the industry itself and those who are interested in waterways as a viable commercial transport mode with a comprehensive list of freight-carrying, inland waterway vessels. Companies owning or operating vessels are listed alphabetically and have been given a reference number which is used in the tables. The inventory is divided into three parts, based on whether craft are self-propelled, dumb barges or tugs. All the vessels within a region are listed by name and ranked by capacity. The parameters of each vessel where known are included, together with an indication of engine horsepower or means of propulsion, and a description of the type of cargo carried, whether dry goods or tanker. It is therefore possible to locate any craft within the tables according to any of these characteristics.
