This report was prepared to document a study of optimum weight ratios of multi-stage rockets. The study includes the effects of gravity and of stage inert weights expressed as a constant plus a term proportional to stage propellant weight. This report includes the case of no gravity field and the case of vertical flight in a constant gravity field. A subsequent report will present the case of general ballistic flight in a constant gravity field. (Author)
