The rail passenger transportation study addresses the intercity and suburban passenger transport by the railroad industry, and the heavy- and light-rail operations of urban transit. The objective of the project is to present a physical and operational description of rail transportation leading to economic models or other analytical tools to identify and assess the costs and effects of energy conservation programs. Intercity service is treated in terms of a national network: suburban, heavy- and light-rail services are treated for regions centered on major cities. Chapter 4 presents information on the National Rail Passenger Network (Amtrak, Auto-Train, Southern Railway Company, and Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company). Chapters 5 through 12 present information on Regional Rail Passenger Services in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.
