Analytical and experimental predictions of speed/power performance of the initial AO 177 Class design showed the capability and need for improvement. Hull form changes were suggested as a result of reviewing the characteristics of existing hulls for which experimental data were available, following the lead of current commercial ship development and conducting abbreviated bulbous bow experiments. A new hull form was then developed, and tests confirmed the estimated reduction in power over the normal range of operating speeds and drafts. (Author)
