This paper presents some observations based on experience with a new generation of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) installed in commercial transport aircraft. The subjects considered are operational requirements and efficiency of the APU in the various operating modes, including the factors which determine APU performance characteristics with respect to a cost effective APU system. These considerations are conducted with a look at development trends as seen from the viewpoint of the aircraft manufacturer.
