This report presents a review of the investment in road infrastructure which has taken place in Ireland since the early 1950's. The strong and continuing growth in the demand for road transport is outlined and the response of the public authorities in terms of road expenditures is measured. The current condition of the road system is assessed and the potential benefits of increased investment are detailed. The report concluded that expenditure on roads has been low by international standards and that increased resources should be devoted to both road investment and maintenance. It is also suggested that policy measures be taken to alleviate the damaging effects of heavy commercial vehicles on the road system and that the information relating to road system condition and use be improved.
