The report outlines the role of systems analysis and mathematical modeling in the planning of transportation systems. The planning process is divided into three sectors, demand, supply, and policy. The composition of each sector is examined and illustrated by samples from recent major transportation studies and the modeling literature. Emphasis is placed on structure, dynamics, and feedback effects. (Author)
