A research laboratory for space experiments in bioproduction and bioseparation developed in a pre-Columbus flight such as Spacelab was studied. The scientific and experimental background, and the requirements of the facility in Spacelab conditions are reviewed. A design concept with selected modular and support equipment (analysis and diagnostics) including feasibility aspects as required services and accommodation, and operations is elaborated.
