The relatively sharp increase in motor cycle deaths as compared with the increase in the number of motor cycles in South Africa between 1974 and 1981 made this study necessary. South African and overseas literature was collected and analyzed. It appears that young inexperienced drivers without drivers' licences in residential areas and open rural areas are the most vulnerable, and also that, when turning at intersections. Recommendations include licensing procedures and the training and education of motor cyclists as well as other road users regarding motor cycling.
