A survey was conducted over the 36-month period from April 1978 to March 1981 wherein participants were asked to maintain monthly diaries in their vehicles to record purchases of fuel, motor oil, tires, and parts and to note whether the purchase was made at a service station, auto parts shop, or other establishment. The effort was conducted to provide detailed information on household expenditures for motor vehicle transportation. Discussed are the steps taken to prepare the raw data for analysis, including error correction, imputing missing purchases, smoothing, and collapsing to monthly summary records. Available data are given on in-use fuel economy, vehicle miles of travel, and fuel demand, highlighting the quarterly trends in these variables. (ERA citation 07:047179)
