The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Environmental Impacts of Aviation Committee issues this first annual summary of critical issues in aviation and the environment in the United States with the goal of identifying priority research that can yield potential benefits during a period that spans the next several years to several decades. The value of the summary is intended to be its cross-disciplinary review of topics of interest to airports and other elements of the aviation community, with the focus on the state of science rather than on policy. The summary comprises six sections, three that address the major environmental media affected by aviation activities (noise, air quality, and water) and three that address key processes that link aviation and the environment (analytical tools, environmental review processes, and technology deployment).
