The routine and special analysis of liquid aviator's breathing oxygen (ABO) is a problem faced by all Air Force operational flying bases. A portable infrared system has been developed that can rapidly determine the quality of ABO at the base level in aircraft, service cart, or bulk supply. The analyzer system was specifically designed to analyze ABO at the point of delivery to the pilot. The excellent performance of the analyzer system during laboratory and field tests, including investigation of a physiologic incident and a survey of contaminants in aircraft oxygen systems, has prompted further evaluation. An extensive program of development, test, and evaluation has been initiated at four Air Force flying bases and is now providing analysis of oxygen quality from several different aircraft.
