This study provides a short background and status report of operational fighter aircrew training in the Air National Guard, informs those within ANG training units and staffs about the major changes taking place in fighter aircrew training, and provides recommendations to improve future ANG training. The Air National Guard provides quality operational fighter aircrew training at four separate locations. This training will continue for the foreseeable future. Adoption of the recommendations in this study will enhance the ANG's ability to accept future training programs prepared by active duty forces. The Guard should be on the leading edge of new training concepts to exploit fully the capabilities of the weapon systems it employs. Competition will be underway for a new reconnaissance aircraft to replace the RF-4 at Boise, and the first time the ANG will be asked to provide all training for both active duty and ARF pilots in the new reconnaissance aircraft. The Air Force Reserve training unit at Barksdale will be providing instruction in the aircraft selected as the replacement for the A-10. Air Staff and ARF planners will be in the initial stages of discussing transfer of training responsibilities to the ARF for the F-15, and planning will be underway for eventual transfer of some F-15Es to the ARF. Due to budgetary constraints more missions will have been placed in the ARF. Air National Guard strength will have increased to over 140,000, and ANG flying units will have increased in number by ten. The ARF will continue to play an important role in the nation's defense, and ANG trainers will be discussing the TAF's increasing role in space systems.
