The different significant parameters in laser rangefinding are reviewed in the context of the Starlette project. Starlette is a 24 cm diameter and 47 kg sphere covered with 60 retroreflectors and placed on a 800 km mean altitude quasi circular orbit. The different formulas giving the number of photons received at the ground station were compared and the characteristics of the retroreflectors (size, angular correction and optical qualities) depending on the project were studied. It is concluded that with the stations actually being developed it is possible to obtain a precision in distance measurement of 15 cm. (Author)
