In the Navy's search to find a more cost-effective maintenance tool, the Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi developed an Expert Maintenance Advisor for the AN/USH-32(V) Signal Data Recorder-Reproducer Set. This analog tape recorder system is a high performance acoustic data recorder/reproducer set used in data acquisition and data processing. Its maintenance is complicated by multiple adjustments, their relationships, and lengthy calibration and checkout procedures. The Expert Maintenance Advisor is a reference aid which has expert knowledge and the complete technical manual (text and graphics) embedded in a PC-based computer that is portable and user friendly. This paper discusses its development, knowledge engineering process and maintenance diagnosis capability. Expert systems, ASW scenarios, Artificial intelligence, Maintenance advisors.
