In a number of fatal collisions involving conventional street lighting columns the colliding vehicles strike the columns sideways-on. A test has been carried out to investigate the behavior of a car when it collides sidways with a steel lighting column fitted with a break-away joint. The test car was made to skid sideways so as to imitate the sort of collision when a vehicle runs off the road out of control. It struck a break-away column side on at a speed of 76 km/h (47 mile/h). It is concluded that break-away columns would be just as effective in reducing accident severity in the event of a sideways collision as they are in the case of a frontal collision. (Author)
